Detachment Operations

AFN Tokyo is an affiliate of the worldwide American Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) and is located at Yokota Air Base, Japan.

The detachment is one five broadcasting detachments comprising the American Forces Network Japan under the umbrella of the Defense Media Activity Headquarters and the Defense Media Activity Pacific located at Ft. Meade, MD.

AFN Tokyo is the largest broadcasting detachment in the Pacific and one of the largest AFRTS stations in the world.       The staff consists of nearly 50 people, including active duty U.S. military broadcasters and maintainers representing all four services, DoD civilians, and Japanese National employees.

The detachment has a large and varied mission.  AFN Tokyo operates and maintains the 50,000 watt Eagle 810 radio station which provides command information and entertainment to all of the major military installations on the Kanto Plain as well as the U.S. Embassy staff and family members in Tokyo.

Eagle 810 broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week with local live programming from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The rest of the broadcast day incorporates satellite radio programming from commercial services in the U.S.  The Eagle also airs The Retro Cafe, the best of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, Saturday and holiday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

AFN television consists of nine channels of entertainment, news, sports and movie programming delivered via satellite from the AFRTS broadcasting center at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, CA.

Nine television services are distributed through base cable systems at each military installation on the Kanto Plain.  Additionally AFN Prime Pacific is distributed via satellite on an additional “virtual” channel which provides important command information to customers who acquire their AFN programming through use of the AFN decoder and satellite dish.

Pacific Regional Media Center

The Defense Media Activity Pacific’s Regional Media Center is responsible for covering the U.S. military story throughout the Pacific theater.

RMC’s are located at Yokota Air Base, Japan and Yongsan Garrison, Seoul, South Korea with an RMC bureau located at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii.  RMC producers travel the entire Pacific region to highlight military members in action, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, from the west coast of the U.S. to the east coast of Africa.

RMC news stories appear on The Pacific Report, the only regional television newscast in the Pacific region.  The newscast airs at 6:45 and 10:00 p.m. on AFN Prime Pacific, Monday through Friday.

In addition the RMC produces Pacific Magazine.  The program takes a more in-depth look at the stories covered by RMC producers such as medical readiness exercises, operations on the South Pole, and the current expansion of military activities on Guam.

RMC news stories can also be seen on military news programs such as Around The Services, Air Force Report and Navy/Marine Corps News.

The RMC is also responsible for producing command information spots which air regionally and locally on AFN channels across the theater.  Command information spots highlight the latest CI initiatives from regional and local commands from across the Pacific.
